Socrates

Sports is never just sports.

Caner Eler, the now-famous Turkish sports journalist, was one of my childhood heroes.

During summer breaks, I used to watch him commentating the Tour de France.
His immense knowledge of road cycling and the athletes was dazzling. But he was more than that. As the peloton passed by petite French towns, Caner was telling us about the vineyards of the region, which cheese to pair those wines with; then quoting a Spanish poet, citing an arthouse film from the 80s…

He was the first true intellectual that I’ve known and I wanted to be like him.

Fast-forward to years later: I couldn’t be anything like him. But I had the chance to work with him for the launch of his new magazine – Socrates.

Socrates was setting out to bring a breath of fresh air into Turkey’s hollow sports media. From the motto -The thinking sports magazine- to the layout of the pages, we created every element of the brand identity at TBWA\Istanbul. I personally wrote and edited the TV spots, which came out to be some of my most favourite works.

In the end, Socrates has become the
best-selling sports magazine in Turkey from the first issue and has set a milestone for Turkish publishing. While I don’t know what is my share in this huge success story, it was a great pleasure to work with Caner and to have a hand in the release of Socrates.
